known best for his role as ‘James Carter’ in the three Rush Hour movies, was identified by the IRS as owing $11.5 million in delinquent tax debt from tax years 2001, 2002, 2004 – 2006.

The IRS filed Notice of Federal Tax Liens on July 27th at the L.A. County Recorder’s Office against the 37-year old actor / comedian.

A Notice of Federal Tax Lien is a legal claim on an individual’s property for payment or satisfaction of a tax debt. It attaches to all property or rights to property a taxpayer has or acquires and is filed in state recording offices to make the tax liability public and protect the IRS's priority against other creditors.

Tucker owns a 9,000 square foot home in Florida. He purchased the home for $6 million in 2007, and is reportedly attempting to short-sale the property to the tune of a $4 million loss, likely in order to produce some quick cash in order to help settle his IRS debt.

Tucker also owns properties in California, one of which is a 6,000 square foot mansion in the exclusive Mulholland Park Community.

In 2009, the State of California also recently filed judgment liens against Tucker for $3.5 million in delinquent state taxes.

For his roles in Rush Hour, Tucker was reported to have earned $20 - $25 million per movie.

For those who like to say that the IRS never goes after the ‘big fish’, then the public lien filings of Tucker’s tax obligations are your answer. Other celebrities have been in the news lately as well for dodging their tax responsibilities to the IRS.

In 2006, actor Wesley Snipes was indicted with 8 counts of conspiracy to defraud the IRS and for presenting fraudulent claims for payment. Snipes made fraudulent claims for refunds in 1996 and 1997 that he was not entitled to, and presented frivolous arguments to support his non-filing of tax returns from 1999 – 2004.

Snipes was found guilty in 2008 of 3 counts of failing to file tax returns from 1999 – 2001, but was acquitted of the felony conspiracy and fraud charges.

In a recent appeal of his 3-year prison sentence that was handed out to him in 2008, the court in Atlanta ruled that the sentence would stand. Despite eloquent statements from ‘character witnesses’ Denzel Washington and Woody Harrelson, the Atlanta court of appeals ruled that Snipes was properly sentenced.

Other notable personalities who found themselves in tax dilemma with the IRS include Snoop Dogg, Pamela Anderson, Prince, Toni Braxton, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, Brooke Shields and Shannen Doherty.

All rich and all now famous as well for their tax troubles.
